Yashanee Vaughn murder case closer to trial

Posted: Updated:

The Yashanee Vaughn murder case is one step closer to going to trial.

Parrish Bennette, now 17 years old, was in court Friday as both sides in this case had a discovery hearing to discuss whether certain evidence should be allowed during trial.

Accused killer Parrish Bennette appeared in court dressed in a blue dress shirt and black slacks. During the court hearing, forensics scientist Chrystal Bell, who works for the Oregon State Police crime lab, explained the consistency between two blood reports she completed, before and after the body was found.

Bell explained how Vaughn was shot in her right ear and the bullet got lodged in her skull.

She told the courtroom that based on tests she ran on clothes, a piece of carpet and a table from the bedroom, Vaughn was shot while she was lying on the ground under a table.

She also discussed how Vaughn's body was discovered in a shallow grave, saying the body was beyond recognition when it was found.

"Her torso was basically vertical and face down and her legs were up and sort of parallel to the ground. So we continued excavation and found the top of her shoulders which were almost the lowest position in the grave," Bell said.

During the hearing the there was also discussion about whether or not to allow certain autopsy photos during the trial.

Judge Baldwin said he would review the photos and make a decision at a later time.

Outside the courtroom, Yashanee's grandmother said the family still believes there are others who helped Bennette get rid of the body.

"We're just concerned now that everybody who has something to do her death be brought to justice," said Reynelda Hayes, Yashanee's grandmother.

Bennette's next hearing is set for Aug. 2. His trial is expected to start in late October.
