Swimmers hit Willamette River for Portland Bridge Swim

Posted: Updated:

Swimmers tested their strength and endurance during the Portland Bridge Swim on Sunday.

The Tualatin Hills Barracudas, a nonprofit masters swim team, sponsored the 11-mile race.

Participants swam from the Sellwood Bridge all the way to the St. John's Bridge.

Many take months to prepare physically and mentally for this swim, but said it's the best way to see the city.

"Last year was our first year, and everybody who came out said wow, that was beautiful," Marisa Frieder, who took part in the race, told FOX 12. "And I've spoken with them later, and they do the same thing I did. You drive over the bridge for the rest of your life and think 'Wow, I swam under that.'"

Proceeds from the event benefit the Willamette Riverkeeper, a group that helps keep the river clean.
