PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Timbers took some time off the field to cheer up some very special patients at the Randall Children's Hospital.

Midfielder Eric Alexander and defender David Horst, along with players from the Aston Villa FC, visiting from England, teamed up with the Children's Cancer Association, known for its in-hospital Music Rx program.

The professional players played instruments with patients at bedside, including Deven Caldwell, who's about to turn 10.

"For him, his birthday is in the next few days, we always try to beat the year before," said mom Rebecca Caldwell. "I don't think you can top it."

The Children's Cancer Association, which helps children fighting cancer and other illnesses, says a little bit of joy can go a long way for families forced to spend long hours in a hospital.

"It puts a lot in perspective for us," said Horst of his visit.  "We're committed to helping these kids out, anything we can to do help them get through it... it's very rewarding for us."
