GOVERNMENT CAMP, OR (KPTV) -
Search and rescue crews rescued a man and his dog who fell into a canyon along the Timberline Trail on Mount Hood on Monday.
Alan Rosenfeld, of West Linn, and his dog were hiking in the Zig Zag Canyon area late Monday afternoon, said an Oregon Humane Society representative.
A Clackamas County Sheriff's Office spokesman said that a witness called 911 after the dog fell down a ravine Monday evening. Deputies said that caller later reported that Rosenfeld fell while attempting to rescue his pet.
"The dog was panicking, and I thought he was going to get hurt more. It looked like I could control my slide and not get hurt myself," Rosenfeld said. "But I knew I wasn't likely going to get out on my own. That's when I actually asked Chris, the first fellow hiker, to seek help, because I knew there would be a need for it."
Clackamas County Search and Rescue crews, along with the help of American Medical Response's Reach Entry team, responded and found Rosenfeld about 40 feet down off the trail. They were able to reach both Rosenfeld and his dog, Ranger, at about 8 p.m. Monday.
Both were hoisted up from a ridge with the help of rescuers equipped with mountaineering gear.
Rescuers said Rosenfeld and the dog were not injured in the fall, and were escorted back to Timberline Lodge on Monday night.
Rosenfeld told rescuers he was on a day hike from Timberline Lodge to the overlook of Big Zig Zag Mountain. It was a hike he had done before with his dog.
