PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who police claim admitted to killing two people in Portland in the 1970s made his first court appearance on Tuesday in Brownsville, TX.

Jeffrey Cutlip, 63, faces murder charges in connection with two cases.

Marlene Carlson was found strangled in her apartment at 715 SW 15th Ave. on Aug. 6, 1975, police said.

She had last been seen alive on July 30, 1975.

The second murder charge Cutlip faces is in connection with the death of 15-year-old Julie Bennett.

She disappeared on April 4, 1977 and was found dead two days later in Johnson Creek, investigators told FOX 12.

Cold Case Homicide Unit detectives are continuing to investigate both cases.

They said releasing additional information could compromise their investigations and the eventual prosecution of Cutlip.

Decades after living on the run, the suspect confessed to Texas authorities over the weekend, police said.
