Gun used by William Holden Courtesy: Movie Madness
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Two prop guns used by John Wayne and William Holden were stolen from Movie Madness on Tuesday afternoon.
The southeast Portland movie rental store is also home to an extensive collection of movie costumes and props, which owner Michael Clark amassed over the years through auctions and friends in the film industry.
It's the first time a prop has been stolen from the store since Clark added the movie museum in 1994.
One gun, a Winchester rifle, was used by John Wayne in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Clark said Wayne personally gave the gun to the movie's prop master, who passed it on to Clark before he died a few years ago.
The other is a shotgun used by William Holden in The Wild Bunch.
"These are all part of the store," said Clark. "And if it's violated me and it's violated the staff, then it's violated our customers as well. And that's the sad part, is that one bad egg coming in here and doing this to hurt us."
Surveillance footage shows the man visiting the case in which the guns were stored multiple times during his 25 minutes in the store. He opens the case gradually before taking the guns, one at a time, into a back room and putting them under his shirt.
The footage shows the man walking out of the store and riding away on his bicycle.
"I'm just hoping, praying, that somebody out there knows who this person is and will let us know so we can get our items back, it would mean so much to me to have to have both of them here," said Clark.
He plans to offer a reward for the safe return of the guns, no questions asked.
Crimestoppers is offering $1,000 to information leading to an arrest.
If you know anything about this case, call Portland police.
