PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

New details are surfacing surrounding the murder of a southeast Portland woman found dead in her apartment earlier this month.

FOX 12 has learned the victim, 32-year-old Nikayla Powell, was living with her accused attacker, 39-year-old Mark D. Beebout.

Friends say he was a homeless man that Powell met while volunteering at Portland's Operation Nightwatch.

Chaplain Roger Fuchs says volunteers with Operation Nightwatch were all shocked to learn about these details.

He says no one knew the victim was even hanging out with the suspect outside of Nightwatch hours, let alone living with him.

Operation Nightwatch is based out of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on Southwest 13th Avenue in Portland. The organization is a place that serves as a sanctuary for the homeless who have nowhere else to go.

Beebout, a registered sex offender, is accused of killing Powell and stealing her car, dog and debit card.

Powell's body was found July 10 in her Southeast Belmont apartment after several neighbors complained about a bad smell coming from her unit.

Chaplain Fuchs says Powell was a relatively new and quiet volunteer and no one really knew much about her personal life.

He says she recently went through mandatory training to be a volunteer, where it was specifically discussed how it was against the organization rules to make contact with the homeless outside of Nightwatch hours for safety reasons.

Beebout was arrested in Seattle earlier this month with the victim's car.  He waived extradition back to Oregon at his hearing this week.

He is expected back in Oregon within a matter of days.
