SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Deputies rescued a little dog named Doodles, who they said was left inside a sweltering car with no water for more than two hours

Marion County deputies were called out to the Enchanted Forest RV Park in Salem on Wednesday afternoon.

It was 91 degrees outside and a worker at the park was worried about a dachshund left inside a 2011 Subaru.

The dog was inside a kennel, with a blanket draped over it, according to deputies.

The windows were cracked about 2 inches, but the temperature inside the car was significantly higher than outside.

A deputy at the scene said he was unable to get a response from the dog.

He tracked down the dog's owner at the RV park. The deputy said William Koskela, 49, of Athena, initially refused to grant him access to the dog to check on its condition.

Eventually, the man changed his mind. The deputy said the dog was dehydrated and showing signs of suffering from the heat.

The kennel also smelled of urine, according to the deputy.

The 1-year-old dog was taken out of the car, given water and then placed in an air-conditioned patrol car.

Doodles was then taken to a shelter, where workers later reported the dog was in good condition.

Koskela was arrested and charged with animal neglect. He posted bail and is due in court on Aug. 22.

The Marion County District Attorney's Office granted permission for Doodles to be returned to the custody of Gina Koskela. She is the suspect's wife.
