More than 200 teachers hit with layoff notices in Beaverton

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

The Beaverton School District laid off more than 200 teachers Thursday, with each school's principal notifying those affected.

Those principals began contacting all employees at 8 a.m. Thursday to let them know if they still had a job or not.

A spokeswoman for the school district said no particular school was targeted over any other, but those with younger staffs will be hit harder.

The layoffs mainly affect teachers who have been with the district three years or less, according to the spokeswoman.

The district said 365 other licensed employees were transferred to another school or position.

As a result of the layoffs, there will be larger class sizes across the board at Beaverton schools.

When the district finalized its budget, 344 positions were set to be eliminated. Through attrition, that number was reduced to 204.
