Million-dollar lawsuit targets NFL star over crash in Portland

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

NFL star Ndamukong Suh is the target of a $1 million lawsuit for an early morning crash in downtown Portland.

The lawsuit alleges Suh lied to police.

Investigators said Suh, who plays for the Detroit Lions and is a graduate of Portland's Grant High School, crashed his 1970 Chevy Chevelle on Dec. 3, 2011.

It happened at 1 a.m. on Southwest 3rd and Burnside.

Police did not open a criminal investigation into the case.

The lawsuit states Suh accelerated at a high rate of speed when a traffic signal turned green, causing the car to spin out of control and slam into a light pole, a fountain and then a tree.

It then claims Suh ordered one of his passengers, Saadia Van Winkle, to get out of the car in an "intimidating and threatening manner."

The woman said she was cut and bleeding above her eye and mouth.

The lawsuit alleges Suh lied to 911 operators and police when he said no one was hurt.

Because of that, she said her husband had to rush to the scene to take her to the hospital.

The lawsuit claims Suh went to Van Winkle's house the following day uninvited and offered her $700 in cash not to make a claim regarding her injuries.

The defendant is seeking $500,000 to compensate for her injuries, along with more than $4,000 to cover medical expenses and $2,500 due to being unable to work after the crash.

The lawsuit also seeks another $500,000 because of "severe emotional stress" caused by Suh's conduct.
