Police are investigating a report that two young children were sexually assaulted inside a restroom at an apartment complex.
According to police, one of the children told a parent that they were sexually assaulted on Wednesday by as many as three older kids during a barbecue for residents at the Quatama Crossing apartments.
Management sent a letter to all residents Friday informing them of the investigation and asking anyone with information to come forward.
"If you have any information that may be helpful to the police, including any photographs you may have taken at the event, please contact Detective Joe Ganete at (503) 681-5427," the letter said.
Hillsboro police confirmed the investigation and told FOX 12 that the children, approximately 5 or 6 years old, reported that they were sexually assaulted by two or three 12 or 13 year olds.
The incident allegedly happened inside the fitness center restroom near where the barbecue took place.
"We did not imagine at all that anything like that would go on here," said Chris Baker, who attended Wednesday's barbecue. "But with this many people that live here I guess it's expected that some things like that will happen. But it's a big shock."
Police said whatever happened must have happened quickly because the restroom was the only one for residents attending the barbecue to use and there were a number of adults nearby.
Police said none of the adults at the event reported seeing anything out of the ordinary.
Details are limited because investigators said the two young children have not been interviewed. The interviews should take place sometime next week.
Investigators aren't sure if the children involved live at the apartment complex.
If you have any information that could help police with their investigation, you're asked to give them a call.
