PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A hazmat crew was called out to a chemical spill at a southwest Portland building Monday afternoon.
It happened at the U.S. Geological Survey Oregon Water Science Center at 2130 SW Fifth Avenue.
The center's director said a lab tech was conducting a water quality experiment, which involves putting various chemicals into clean water to see how they react.
Firefighters say the worker was mixing about 30 pesticide chemicals at the time.
One of the samples fell onto a bench and broke.
While cleaning up the spill, the worker got some of the chemical on his hand. He then began to feel woozy and called 911.
Firefighters evacuated the areas near the affected room as a precaution. No one else was hurt.
The worker who came in contact with the chemical was decontaminated by a hazmat team. He was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
