NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -
Preparation work is under way to slice up and haul away a dock that floated to the Oregon coast after the tsunami in Japan.
The 66-foot-long dock washed ashore near Agate Beach just north of Newport in June.
The removal process is set to officially begin on Wednesday, but crews started the beginning preparations on Monday.
That included putting down railroad ties to make a temporary road from the harder sand along the water to the street.
Once that's in place, workers from Ballard Diving and Salvage of Vancouver will cut up the dock and haul away each section.
The pieces will then be recycled.
Work is scheduled to be completed by Friday. Visitors are welcome to watch the process unfold, but the immediate area will be roped off for safety.
One corner of the dock will remain in Newport. The city plans to use it for a memorial.
