A 16-year-old girl drowned after a raft carrying several people capsized near Roseburg.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said it happened at around 2:40 p.m. Sunday, on the North Umpqua River near Copeland Creek.
After the raft overturned, Nichole Pomeroy, 16, became trapped in debris underwater and drowned. Six others were on board, but made it safely to shore.
All of the rafters were wearing life jackets, but investigators said Pomeroy's came off when she went underwater.
Several agencies, including Oregon State Police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Dive Team, responded to the scene. Divers were not able to pull Pomeroy's body from the river because of the debris.
Crews worked until 9:30 p.m. Sunday night, but failed to retrieve Pomeroy's body. Rescuers returned to the scene Monday morning to continue their efforts.
