TriMet purchasing 18 new MAX trains

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

TriMet has ordered 18 new MAX trains.

The new trains will be used as part of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project.

It's the first time the organization has purchased new trains since September 2009. Those trains were for the debut of the MAX greenline.

Since that time, riders and employees have suggested a number of improvements that will be incorporated into the next-generation trains.

Some of the changes include additional seats between the doors to accommodate seniors and riders with disabilities.

There will also be new boarding ramps, increased leg room in some seats and an air conditioning system that should appease people who feel the current trains are too cold.

The new trains are scheduled to arrive in the summer of 2014 and should be on the road in 2015, when MAX service is set to begin as part of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project.
