PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
An apparent deadline for homeless campers and protesters to remove their personal property from sidewalks near City Hall came and went without police action Wednesday morning.
The campers told FOX 12 the city posted notices on trees and newspaper boxes Tuesday that instructed the items must be removed or police could seize them by 8 a.m. One camper told FOX 12 the flyers said the encampment was a public nuisance.
On Wednesday morning, there were about 30 people sleeping on the
sidewalk in front of Chapman Square and a about a dozen in front of
Portland City Hall.
Many of the campers moved away from the front of City Hall and went across the street to hang out at Chapman Square, where they can legally stay during the day. Others continued to sleep on Southwest Fourth Avenue in front of the park, despite the deadline.
FOX 12 does not have a timeline of if or when police may remove campers' personal property.
The encampment in front of City Hall grew in the last few weeks after an Occupy protester staged a hunger strike in front of the building. The strike ended last week, but the campers remained.
On Wednesday morning, there were no campers in Lownsdale or Chapman Squares, where last fall Occupy protesters camped for months, until police cleared them out.
