Eugene man found dead 18 days after initial search

LINN COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Jonathan Harper, 40, has been found dead in Carmen Reservoir.

Linn County Sheriff's deputies first suspected Harper was missing when his backpack was discovered near Sahalie Falls in east Linn County.  In the hunt for more information, police checked his home in Eugene and found a suicide note dated July 9, 2012.  The note prompted a search near the falls but yielded no results.

Based on the backpack's location, officers could guess that Harper had jumped to his death from a 125-foot cliff. Searching the area where he may have fallen was impossible - the sheer cliffs and water conditions were too hazardous for divers.

Last Saturday, 18 days after Harper was first thought to have gone missing, sheriff's deputies responded to a report of body floating in the Carmen Reservoir.  After a recovery effort and dental records check, the body was confirmed as Harper's.

No foul play is suspected and injuries to the body were consistent with those a person would receive after falling a long distance.
