SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
Survivors of Oregon State Police troopers killed in the line of duty ceremoniously broke ground on a memorial honoring their loved ones.
The shovels hit the dirt Wednesday at the Oregon State Capitol State Park in Salem.
Wednesday was also the department's 81st anniversary.
That Salem park outside the west entrance to the Public Service Building will be the site of the memorial, which has been in the planning stages for 17 months.
The project is being funded entirely by private donations. Construction will begin once the goal of raising $233,000 is reached.
For more information on the memorial or how to make a donation, go the Oregon State Police Memorial website.
