Firefighters were called out to an apartment fire in Southeast Portland Wednesday night.
Smoke was reported inside one of the units at 6:20 p.m. at 1225 S.E. Belmont St.
The sprinkler system had been activated by the time firefighters arrived.
The fire was doused by the sprinklers, but a couch was still smoking.
Nobody was home in the apartment that was burning, but firefighters said a cat was inside.
Firefighters administered oxygen to the cat and it survived.
A unit downstairs sustained water damage, along with the unit where the fire started.
The cause is under investigation.
