SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A memorial to honor fallen members of the Oregon State Patrol is now under way after 17 months of planning.

On Wednesday, groundbreaking began on the grounds of the Oregon State Capitol State Park in Salem. The date also marked the 81st anniversary of OSP.

About 150 attended the event, including OSP officials and state legislators. Oregon State Police Superintendent Richard Evans thanked those who worked to make the memorial a reality, saying that it would ensure that the fallen OSP troopers are never forgotten.

The memorial was made possible by private donations and will only use businesses and materials from the Northwest. Construction will begin once the $233,000 fundraising goal is reached. Donations can be made to the "OSP Fallen Trooper Memorial" at any U.S. Bank Branch or online at the Fallen Trooper Memorial website.

Information about fallen Oregon State Police troopers is available on the Department's website.
