PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Improperly discarded cigarettes are being blamed for starting a fire that ripped through a north Portland apartment complex.
The fire started at about 2:30 p.m. at the Clarendon Terrace Apartments on the corner of North Fessenden Street and North Clarendon Avenue.
It got going on the deck of one apartment and spread into another unit.
Firefighters said gasoline was stored on the back porch. When the smoking materials ignited, the fire reached the gasoline and caused it to spread fast.
No injuries were reported.
The two units below the apartments that caught fire suffered water damage.
Investigators initially thought an outdoor grill may have been the cause of the fire, but later attributed it to smokers.
Damages are estimated at $100,000.
