PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Hunger, unlike the sun, is not seasonal. Thanks to an Oregon Food Bank program, local kids will not have to go hungry over the summer.

On Thursday, the Harvest Share program handed out fresh fruits and vegetables to families with kids. Volunteers with Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon gave their time to help with the federally funded program.

Organizers say Harvest Share brings awareness to childhood hunger, especially in the summer, when many free and reduced-cost meal programs for kids come to an end all over the state. It is believed that approximately one in five children in Oregon go hungry.

Volunteers from Regence plan to conduct food drives for OFB over the weekend in Portland, Salem and Medford.

They estimate that the food distribution on Thursday helped out between 60 and 100 families.
