PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
TriMet is warning weekend commuters about possible delays because of warmer temperatures in the forecast.
TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt said travelers on the agency's MAX trains can expect minor delays when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or more.
Altstadt said temperatures in this range cause the rails to expand and the overhead power wires to sag a little lower. Because of this, trains traveling in speed zones of more than 35 mph will have to run on average 10 mph slower.
If the air temperature reaches more than 100 degrees, all trains will have to slow to less than 35 mph throughout the MAX rail network. Such speed adjustments could create delays of anywhere from 10-15 minutes, according to Altstadt.
TriMet is asking riders to be patient and to check for delays on their website.
