PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The Portland metro area broke a single-day temperature record Saturday with a recording of 102 degrees at the airport.
The previous record for August 4th was 100 degrees set back in 1990. Saturday was also the hottest day of 2012 so far.
People looking for a way to cool off flocked to rivers, lakes and swimming pools.
Lifeguards were on high alert at High Rocks Park as dozens of swimmers took turns cliff diving into the water.
"But the thing that people don't realize with the water is that it is still in the 60's so our big concern even on hot days is hypothermia," said lifeguard Scott Stafford.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory effective from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday.
That advisory was for the greater Portland and Vancouver metro areas, the central and south Willamette Valley, the lower Columbia and Interstate 5 corridor in southwest Washington.
With more warm temperatures expected Sunday, experts urge people to take extra precautions if you plan to work or spend time outside.
When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Remember to wear light weight and loose-fitting clothing and drink lots of water.
Finally, please use caution around area waterways and be sure to wear a life jacket.
