Neighborhood jolted awake when van explodes

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

The usually quiet community of Glenwood in rural Washington County was rocked by a powerful blast early Sunday morning.

Initial reports coming in just before 7:00 a.m. indicated that the explosion may have erupted in a shop next to a home in the 17700 block of Northwest Glenwood Lane.

When Forest Grove and Banks firefighters arrived on the scene, they didn't find fire or even smoke in the area. What they did find, however, was a van whose parts flew off in all directions, and many broken windows and doors on nearby buildings.

A fire spokesman says the explosion appeared to have been caused by a propane line in the van.  The van had been converted into a recreational vehicle.

The explosion completely destroyed the van.  Damage to the nearby buildings is estimated to be about $5000.

Forest Grove Fire and Rescue says this is a good reminder for people to check their recreational vehicles for faulty wiring and pipes.
