PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A suspect has been arrested for what police call a gang-related shooting near a local park in July.
Teondre Bonner, 20, was arrested Aug. 2 at a motel in Lacey, WA.
Arrest warrants were issued for him on charges of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon.
Police said he was involved in the shooting near Peninsula Park in north Portland on the afternoon of July 12.
Police said someone opened fire from a van in the direction of two men walking on the sidewalk, alongside the park, which was filled with people at the time. Witnesses said the two people on the sidewalk ran into a community center, where detectives later recovered a gun inside a bag.
No one was hurt, but one bullet hit a parked car, another struck the side of the community center, according to police.
"Violence in a park or community center with kids present is totally, totally, totally unacceptable," said Mayor Sam Adams who spoke at a news conference Monday to announce the arrest.
"We are going to go after these criminals with everything we can," said Mayor Adams. "The best way to prevent the next crime, the next shooting is to solve the last one."
As part of the investigation, Portland police served search warrants at three different locations. Chief Mike Reese says more arrests are expected.
"We do know this part of an ongoing gang feud between select gangs we've been experiencing for the last couple of years," said Chief Reese.
Over the last few weeks, the gang enforcement team has remained busy, arresting 58 gang members for various charges and seizing 25 guns, as part of Operation Safe Summer, according to the Chief.
In addition, The Parks Bureau announced more than a dozen rangers will be added to patrol city parks, as well as additional security cameras and radios for staff.
"I'm glad there's a response," said parent Doug Smith whose son was at Peninsula Park, the day of the shooting.
"It's unfortunate that we're going to have to have security at our park, that children aren't just safe, but I guess that's just the reality of the world," said Smith.
Meanwhile, Bonner was booked into the Thurston County Jail in Washington and will await extradition to Oregon.
He has five previous arrests since 2010, including a misdemeanor weapons charges.
