PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A bicycle counter donated by Cycle Oregon will be activated Wednesday on the Hawthorne Bridge.

The counter is the first of its kind in the United States. It will show the number of people on bikes who ride past it while gathering cycling data for the city.

Cycle Oregon co-founder Jonathan Nicholas, Multnomah County Commissioner Deborah Kafoury and Portland Bureau of Transportation Director Tom Miller will speak at a public unveiling ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Aug 8. The counter will then be turned on as a group of cyclists rides by.

The counter has been installed on the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge on the northern path.
