KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

A car slammed into a fire engine that was responding to a crash scene on Interstate 5 in Kelso.

It happened Aug. 3 in the southbound lanes around 5 p.m.

Cowlitz fire and rescue crews were responding to a two-car crash at the time.

Firefighters were checking for injuries in the median of the road, according to investigators, when a Ford Focus slammed into the rear of the fire engine.

No injuries were reported, as the driver's airbag properly deployed. Damage to the engine is still being figured out.

Firefighters said the car was driven by an unnamed 19-year-old and the car was totaled. Investigators said it was traveling at "highway speeds" leading up to the crash.

The fire engine weighs over 40,000 pounds.

In the past 15 years, Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue has only had two other accidents involving a fire engine getting hit on the highway.

Emergency responders remind drivers to always pull to the right when police and firefighters have their lights and sirens on.
