Rough rapids on the Deschutes River turned deadly for a Portland woman.
The Bend Sheriff's Office said Sharie Smith drowned in a dangerous stretch of the river at Lava Island Falls on Sunday night.
Deputies said that stretch of the river is usually only used by experienced boaters and they're not sure if she intended to brave the rapids.
Smith was in a three-person inflatable raft with another Portland woman who was able to swim to shore.
