COLTON, OR (KPTV) -

A woman riding a horse suffered a terrible accident that stranded her in thick brush down steep terrain and near a large hornet nest on Tuesday.

It all started in the woods near Colton just before 1 p.m.

Emergency crews were called out to help a woman who was trapped down a trail.

A person that was with the woman met up with firefighters at the trail and led them down three miles before getting lost, according to the Colton fire chief.

They had to hike back out, another three miles, to continue the search.

Several other agencies were involved and one crew located the woman four to five miles down a trail.

Rescuers discovered that her horse had rolled over on her, causing serious injuries. She was also next to a large hornet nest.

They loaded the woman into a basket and started to walk her out, but the conditions made it very difficult to move her.

Finally, crews had a local man cut them a trail back to a house of Bittner Mill Road.

It took four hours, but they finally got the woman out.

She was conscious and alert and taken by LifeFlight to a local trauma center.
