Bridge Pedal to partially close all 10 Willamette River bridges

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

For the first time in four years, all 10 of Portland's Willamette River bridges will be partially closed to traffic for the Providence Bridge Pedal.

The 17th annual event begins Sunday, Aug 12 at 6:30 a.m. on the Morrison Bridge. Cyclists will continue onto the Sellwood, Hawthorne, Ross Island, Marquam, Burnside, Broadway, Steel, St. Johns, and Fremont bridges.

In recent years, bridge construction has prevented organizers from utilizing all 10 of the city's bridges for the event.

In addition to the 10 bridge route, riders can opt for an eight- or six-bridge option, and the Providence Bridge Stride will give pedestrians a chance to walk across the Broadway and Fremont bridges starting at 8 a.m.

The event continues at JELD-WEN Field, where Providence will offer free CPR lessons and health screenings at the Providence Bridge Pedal Health and Wellness Expo.

The following bridges will experience partial or complete closures. Times are approximate:

  • The Sellwood Bridge will be closed to westbound traffic from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
  • The Ross Island Bridge will be closed to westbound traffic from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • The Marquam Bridge (Interstate 5) will be closed to northbound (upper deck) traffic from
    4:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • The Hawthorne Bridge will be closed to eastbound traffic (except TriMet buses) from
    5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • The Morrison Bridge will be closed to eastbound traffic from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • The Burnside Bridge will be closed to westbound traffic from 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • The Steel Bridge will be closed to eastbound traffic from 5:45 a.m. until 10 a.m. MAX
trains will operate on the Steel Bridge.
  • The Broadway Bridge will be closed to eastbound traffic from 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • The Fremont Bridge (Interstate 405) will be closed to southbound (upper deck) traffic
from 3 a.m. until noon, with access by bicyclists ending at 11:30 a.m.
  • The St. Johns Bridge will close one lane in each direction (with one lane remaining open
in each direction) from 6 a.m. to noon.

Many other streets, highways and freeways will be affected by the ride.
