MILWAUKIE, OR (KPTV) -
Fifteen people were evacuated early Wednesday morning when a fire ripped through an apartment building in Milwaukie.
Clackamas Fire District No. 1 responded to multiple reports of an apartment fire at the Westview Villa Apartment Complex on southeast Westview about 1 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the both sides of unit, as residents of the involved building were in the process of evacuating. Witnesses also reported hearing large explosions.
"At first I thought it was gunshots, so I was kind of leery opening my front door, but as soon as I saw the orange it was like 'oh my God.' Yeah, it was scary," said neighbor Kandi Jones.
One man was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. A firefighter also suffered a neck injury. Both injuries were not serious.
The building involved in the fire was made up of four two-story apartment units. Clackamas Fire is working closely with the Red Cross to ensure the 15 evacuated residents are taken care of.
No word yet on damage estimates. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
