PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A Portland homeless man was indicted on murder charges, and Fox 12 now knows more about the crime he's accused of committing.
Investigators arrested Mark Beebout about a month ago. He faces charges of killing Nikayla Powell.
According to court records, Powell's body was discovered inside her apartment on Southeast Belmont in Portland on July 10.
A medical examiner says her badly decomposed body had a shoestring tied around her neck.
Records show Powell met Beebout through a group that helps homeless people.
That group's leaders say they will reinforce rules about not befriending participants.
Gary Davis with Operation Nightwatch said, "We've had a stringent set of guidelines for our volunteers keeping boundaries for many years now. But in light of Nikki's death, we want to make sure our volunteers are aware of those and subscribe to those."
Beebout pleaded not guilty. His trial is set for Sep. 20.
