Two earthquakes hit off Oregon Coast

YACHATS, OR (KPTV) -

Two earthquakes that hit off the Oregon Coast on Wednesday measured 4.5 and 4.9 in magnitude.

The largest quake happened Wednesday morning about 224 miles west of Yachats. The second quake happened almost 12 hours later, about 271 miles west of Yachats.

FOX 12 meteorologists said there's no need to worry about the quakes.

Though the "big one" will hit someday in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the largest quake Wednesday took place in the Blanco Fracture Zone, according to the FOX 12 Weather Blog. The Blanco Fracture Zone is farther away and quakes are common there - there have been multiple quakes in the past three weeks.

"Nothing to worry about because these earthquakes can't produce a tsunami, and they are from two crustal plates sliding alongside each other, not one going under another," wrote meteorologist Mark Nelsen.
