PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Trees are now covering 30 percent of Portland.

A Portland Parks and Recreation aerial imagery study shows that Portland's urban tree canopy has grown by 2.6 percent over the last 10 years.

The study is based on aerial images from 2000, 2005 and 2010 and reveals citywide and zoning class urban forest cover change.

Over the 10-year period, canopy increases were seen across all zoning classes.

Tree canopy cover increased by 3.4 percent in commercial areas, 1.5 percent in industrial areas, 1.5 percent in open space and 3.3 percent in residential areas.

The tree canopy now covers 29.9 percent of the city.

The city's goal is to reach 33 percent by 2030.

The next monitoring phase will happen in 2015.
