INDEPENDENCE, OR (KPTV) -

A Benton County sheriff's deputy and a Salem police officer were seriously injured in a shooting Saturday night.

Officials released the names of the deputy and officer who were hurt by gunfire.

Sgt. David Peterson, 29, with the Benton County Sheriff's Office, was shot multiple times and remains in the hospital in serious condition.

Cpl. Andrew Connolly, 46, with the Salem Police Department, was treated and released from the hospital.

Connolly has been with Salem police for 13 years.

Peterson has been with the Benton County Sheriff's Office for six years.

It was at about 10:30 p.m. when deputies got a report of a man trespassing with a weapon on Northwest Scenic Avenue.

Salem police and Benton County deputies responded to the report and were told the suspect was leaving in a car that was possibly stolen.

The driver tried to escape the officers, but eventually crashed near the intersection of Northwest Springhill drive and Northwest Independence Highway.

The suspect then ran off and hid nearby, according to investigators.

Officers then started a search.

They were confronted by the man, who investigators said opened fire.

The alleged gunman was also shot and was taken by helicopter to Willamette Valley Hospital, where he remains Sunday.

Officials have not released the identity of the suspect, except to say he was a 32-year-old Hispanic man.
