PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A police officer was injured early Sunday in southeast Portland when he was hit by a car door as a woman tried to evade arrest, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The officer was responding to a call from a concerned resident on Southeast Harrison Street near 156th Avenue, according to police reports. The man said a young woman was parked in a silver sedan in front of a vacant house and appeared "suspicious" and "high."

When an officer began questioning the woman through the driver's side front door, she became confrontational, according to police. The woman suddenly started the car and accelerated backward, hitting the officer with the door and knocking him onto the ground.

The woman sped down 156th Avenue and turned on Division. After a mile she slammed into a telephone pole at 143rd Avenue. The woman was ejected from the car and taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

The police officer - a five-year veteran of the force - had only minor injuries.
