Escaping chimp heading to Oregon

BEND, OR (KPTV) -

Supporters of a chimp named CJ hope the animal will find bliss in Bend.

The plan to move the chimp to a central Oregon sanctuary is being fast-tracked after another escape over the weekend.

CJ made headlines around the country in July, when it escaped with another chimp named Buddy.

Police shot and killed Buddy roaming a neighborhood when officers said the chimp became aggressive.

CJ was taken into custody alive, but broke out again on Saturday.

The 13-year-old primate was being housed in an enclosure at the home of Las Vegas magician Dirk Arthur.

Caretakers believe someone bent the cage's steel bars to allow CJ to escape again.

The chimp was tranquilized and captured quickly this time, and didn't threaten any people.

Now, CJ is heading to a sanctuary in Bend.

Chimps Inc. of Bend is asking for donations on its website to help fund CJ's trip to live in their sanctuary with other chimps.

After Saturday's escape, CJ's caretakers arranged to have the chimp moved to its new home in Bend on Tuesday.
