PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The cremated remains of four Oregon veterans were laid to rest with full military honors Wednesday.
The cremains date back to 1919 and were among those discovered at the Oregon State Hospital in 2004.
Since that time, the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs has been working together with the hospital and the Veterans Administration to identify the veterans.
The ceremony took place at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd.
Pvt. James Butler served in the Amy from 1940-1941. Lanier Johnson, rank unknown, served in the Navy from 1917-1919. Sgt. William Madson served in the Army from 1943-1946. BM Frank Martin served in the Navy from 1943-1946.
The exact dates of their deaths remain unknown.
The Oregon Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team provided the military honors at the ceremony. The Patriot Guard Riders were also in attendance.
"While we know little about these men, we do know they honorably served their country during one of two world wars," said Val Conley, deputy director of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs. "That sacrifice in itself is deserving of a fitting burial with full military honors that this state will give them and to others who are identified later."
