Another round of I-5 closures this weekend

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Interstate 5 northbound will be closed this weekend between the Marquam Bridge and the Fremont Bridge for road work.

Traffic from south of Portland should use Interstate 205, instead.

The ramp to Interstate 84 will remain open.

The closure begins at 11 p.m. Friday and will last until 5 a.m. Monday.

The closure is part of a project to rehabilitate the aging one-mile stretch of freeway. The half-inch grind and the application of the new polymer concrete surface will provide a smoother and quieter drive.

Drivers should avoid the area or plan for significant delays. Backups are also expected on Interstate 405 and Highway 26 leading to northbound I-405.

Traffic northbound on I-5 heading to I-84 may cross the Marquam Bridge to the ramp to eastbound I-84.

Drivers who miss the split to I-405 northbound and continue on I-5 north across the Marquam Bridge will be forced to leave the freeway at exit 300, to I-84.

The ramp from westbound 84 to I-5 north will close only at night, from 11 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, 11 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday and 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

A similar closure of the northbound lanes will be in place from 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 to 5 a.m. Monday Sept. 10.

There will be no project closures the weekend of Aug. 25 for the Hood-to-Coast race and no closures over the three-day Labor Day weekend.
