TIGARD, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon soldier was killed during combat in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Andrew J. Keller, 22, of Tigard died Wednesday in Charkh.

The Department of Defense said he was killed after enemy forces attacked his unit.

Keller's father said Thursday night the family can't wrap their heads around this tragedy yet.

At the same time, he wants everyone to know what a great man his son was.

"He was humble, but very confident," said Jeff Keller. "He was loving but could be firm when he needed to be. He was my best friend, and it's very, very difficult."

Keller's father said his son was planning to marry his girlfriend when he returned home.

The soldier's family said his body will return to Oregon on Saturday.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
