PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police have identified the body of a man found in the Willamette River early Tuesday morning.

The medical examiner's office said Lev Progrebinsky, 43, drowned in the river. His body was found near the Steel Bridge just after 4 a.m.

Deputies said he was known to be a homeless man from Santa Cruz, CA. He had recently started traveling by Greyhound bus to points in Washington, including Olympia and Yakima.

An Aug. 8, according to investigators, he boarded a bus in Santa Cruz on his way to Olympia.

During a brief stop in Portland, deputies believe Progrebinsky visited with people in the Old Town area near the Greyhound bus depot.

He failed to return to his bus to continue on to Olympia.

Deputies said Progrebinsky had a history of substance abuse issues and had previously received mental health services.
