Man filled water bottle with rubbing alcohol, watched mom drink it

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon man will spend more than a year in prison for filling a Crystal Geyser water bottle with rubbing alcohol, watching his mother drink it and then filing a false report with the Food and Drug Administration.

Curtis Purdy, 35, not only filed a complaint with the FDA, but asked for money from Crystal Geyser after his mom became ill from drinking the water bottle purchased at Albertsons. He never told his mother or her doctors about the contents of the water bottle, but finally admitted to filling it with rubbing alcohol in May 2012, federal authorities said.

The case stemmed from an investigation by the FDA's criminal investigation division.

A U.S. district judge sentenced Purdy on Monday to 18 months in prison for making a false report of consumer product tampering.

"We take reports of consumer product tampering very seriously to prevent threats to the public's health and welfare," said U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall in a statement. "The integrity of the reporting system is crucial to anti-tampering efforts, and those who knowingly make false reports will be prosecuted."
