Tigard police said theft from cars - largely in commercial areas - typically spikes in August, but there could be more than normal this month.
Last year, police investigated 23 break-ins in August. This year the total is already 23 with more than a week to go. There were only 14 thefts reported all last month, police said.
On Monday, a thief broke out the window of Lupe Escobar's SUV and stole her purse while it was parked outside the Safeway on Pacific Highway. The most valuable item taken was a digital camera with hundreds of pictures of her children, she said.
"You can replace your driver's license, you can replace the broken window, but pictures you can't replace," Escobar said.
Police say thieves are looking for valuable items in plain sight.
"I'm going to learn from it, but it's unfortunate that so many people out there are doing this kind of stuff," said Escobar. "(They are) breaking into cars and not realizing what they're putting the victims through."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Tigard police.
