PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The Olympics may be over, but one track star from Oregon is still in search of a world record.
And this one involves beer.
U.S. Olympian and 2006 Willamette University graduate Nick Symmonds, according to TMZ, just ran a mile in 5:19 at the Lane Community College track in Eugene.
That may not sound like much of a time for an athlete who just competed in London, but he was also chugging beers as he ran around the track.
Symmonds, 28, is in pursuit of a world record in an obviously unofficial track and field event known as the "Beer Mile."
TMZ said it works like this: The runner is required to throw back an entire beer at the beginning of the race, then another full can of beer at every quarter-mile mark.
Symmonds finished fifth in the 800m race in London and came up just short in his quest for "Beer Mile" immortality.
The world record is 5:09, set by Canadian marathon runner Jim Finlayson, the TMZ website reports.
Symmonds ended up slightly off that pace.
He told TMZ he isn't giving up on his "Beer Mile" record-setting goal just yet.
"I've got some training to do," Symmonds said.
Symmonds had a crowd of friends cheering him on and said the whole thing was just supposed to be a fun way to cap off the Olympic season.
He added that he had a designated driver to take him home after his beer-fueled run around the track.
