VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Vancouver homeowner shot and killed an intruder in his bedroom, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Police have identified the intruder as 42-year-old Christopher Jon Billings, of Kansas City, Missouri.

Major crimes detectives are investigating the shooting in the 3700 block of NE 54th Avenue. Investigators say a man called 911 to report he'd shot the intruder in his bedroom shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

"It's too close for comfort," said Jeannine Compton, who lives next door. "It's very scary."

Vancouver police and Washington State Patrol troopers arrived at the home and found Billings' body in the bedroom. According to investigators, it appears as if Billings got into the home through an unlocked door and forced his way into the secured bedroom.

Billings and the homeowner do not know each other.

"What in the world was he doing over here? Why was he on our street? What are his ties over here? It's scary," Compton said.

Prior to the shooting, a Washington State trooper was conducting a traffic stop less than a half-block from the home. The trooper noticed Billings stumbling down the sidewalk and mumbling incoherently. The trooper, who was concerned the man was a danger to himself, called dispatch to ask for officers to check on the man.

Police were searching for him when they learned of the shooting.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about Billings and any ties that he may have to the area to call them.

Police said the identity of the homeowner will not be released.
