Starting Tuesday, Sept. 4, you can watch Perry Mason on KPDX at 8 a.m. each weekday.
The Perry Mason show has been a Portland favorite for decades.
An old advertisement spreads the word about Perry Mason in its then 7:30 p.m. time slot.
BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -
There's a well-known fact in the KPTV newsroom: interrupt Perry Mason for breaking news and you'll hear about it.
We can wait until 5 p.m. to hear the news, the faithful Perry viewers will say. Just put Perry back on.
The classic show's 46-year run on KPTV has made for a loyal group of viewers in Oregon and southwest Washington.
But on Tuesday, Sept. 4, Perry fans will tune in on a different channel in a different time slot: PDX TV (Channel 49 / Cable 13) at 8 a.m.
Patrick McCreery, KPTV and KPDX's Vice President and General Manager said the show's performance in the market's noon time slot has dropped off in recent years, prompting the change.
Over the past four decades, the show's 271 episodes - all but one are in black-and-white - have aired in rotation on KPTV. Now, the lunchtime staple becomes a breakfast regular.
"I've received a lot of calls from people who enjoy watching Perry Mason while they eat lunch. It's sort of a ritual or a routine for several folks in Portland and southwest Washington," McCreery said. "Hopefully, they can have their morning toast and coffee with Perry. We don't want to completely disrupt their meal time, so this is the best option we could come up with rather than getting rid of it altogether."
A shakeup in daytime television contributed to the show's departure. The end of The Oprah Winfrey Show led to a crush of new talk shows entering the marketplace: from Katie Couric to Steve Harvey to Anderson Cooper.
The Rachael Ray Show will be taking Perry Mason's place at noon on KPTV, followed by The Steve Harvey Show and The Anderson Cooper Show.
Perry Mason will stay on KPDX for the foreseeable future.
"At this point, we're planning to keep Perry Mason on for at least another two years," McCreery said.
