PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The Portland Timbers have hired a new head coach for the 2013 season.
The club announced Wednesday that Caleb Porter will take over the position next season.
Porter spent seven years coaching the University of Akron. He also recently served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 National Team.
The 37-year-old will remain the head coach at Akron through the 2012 NCAA season and assume his new role with the Timbers in December.
Porter's Akron team won the school's first national title in any sport in 2010. He owns the highest winning percentage among active NCAA Division I coaches, with a career mark of 106-17-14.
The Timbers fired the club's first MLS coach, John Spencer, in July. The team's general manager Gavin Wilkinson was named the interim head coach for the rest of the season.
