PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A shooting outside of a northeast Portland Safeway has police scrambling to find the person responsible.

Police say shots were fired just after 6 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Northeast Fremont and 70th.

Fortunately there were no reported injuries despite the suspect firing into an open parking lot in the middle of rush hour traffic, according to police.

"It was just strange to come home and find police looking for bullet casings in my driveway," said homeowner Ernest Yourgolez. "I mean, I've got a little one, and this doesn't feel very good."

Witnesses tell police that the suspect fired one shot at a car that was speeding out of the parking lot and then got in their own car and drove off.

Police say several witnesses were able to follow the suspect's car to 84th and Russell, where they watched a person get out and run into a home and then the car took off again.

Police followed the suspect's car to 92nd and forced the driver to pull over. They arrested that driver shortly later.

Police then surrounded the home on 84th for about an hour because they thought a person of interest was inside.  However, detectives eventually made contact with the homeowner and determined that was not the case, according to police.

Police would not say if the person they arrested was the person who opened fire in the Safeway parking lot or if they are still actively searching for the shooter.

No further details are available at this time.
