OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -
Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run case involving a 13-year-old girl in Oregon City.
Oregon City police said Juan Delatorre called them from a pay phone Wednesday to turn himself in.
He told detectives his conscience had been bothering him since the crash, according to police.
He was arrested on charges relating to the hit-and-run on Aug. 20 that left Kalei Campbell, 13, unconscious on the ground.
Police said she was crossing Brighton Avenue from Barclay to walk to a park when she was struck.
Witnesses reported seeing the driver briefly stop, get out of the vehicle to look at the victim, then argue with his passenger and drive off.
"How can you hit someone and leave them," Campbell's mother, Joyce Gulley told Fox 12 last week. "Thinking about her not being here. I don't know what I would do without her."
Campell spent a night in the hospital, but was released the next day and remains recovering at home.
A couple of days after the crash, a viewer spotted the suspect vehicle in his Oregon City apartment complex. Police took the vehicle to a crime lab for processing and determined it to be the car involved in the crash.
According to court documents, Oregon City police said Delatorre admitted to being the driver involved in the crash.
Police said he tried to get rid of the vehicle a couple of days later, according to the arrest affidavit.
Prosecutors said future charges may be brought against the suspect as the investigation continues.
Police have also contacted the passenger in the car, a teenager. As of now, she has not been charged.
